Both his sons- Lord Ganesha and Lord Kartikeya volunteered and therefore, Lord Shiva decided to test them to pick the best one. He said that whoever completes a journey around the world, takes bath in all the Holy rivers, and comes back first will be declared the leader. Lord Kartikeya quickly took off on his peacock when Lord Ganesha began circling his parents, seeking their blessings. When asked the reason for this, he dutifully replied that his parents are his world. That is how he came to be known as Ganapati- Lord of the Ganas.
