Matanga: The Elephant

Elephants are among the most peaceful beasts walking the Earth. Very grand and majestic, they were kept in royal stables both for their presence and to serve in times of war, and are still used in various processions. However, it is also true about elephants that once angered, they cannot be controlled. This is one reason why elephants always made their entry in warfare. Lord Ganesha, a much revered god in Hindu religion, is said to have the head of an elephant and Lord Indra, god of war is portrayed riding an elephant named Airavat. With such prominance and granduer, artisans and sculptors across the nations found elephants a great topic for their art. This black coloured scultpure of an elephant carved out of teak wood is one such tribute.
