Tathagata: The Lord who Attained Perfection

Siddharta Gautama who left his family, royalty and pleasures and the age of 29 could not receive answers to his questions on suffering for several years despite extreme meditation and sacrifice. He went as far as giving up food to the stage of starvation and not accepting a drop of water either. One day, a young girl offered him a bowl of rice and then it dawned upon him that harsh and extreme measures do not liberate the soul and that one needs to maintain a balance in his life. That night Buddha became enlighted under the Bodhi tree and encouraged others to follow this path. He did so by conducting various sermons and teaching through mudras. This sandstone sculpture portrays him in one of his mudras, at the moment in which he attained perfect knowledge.
