Shiva, the lord of destruction is also known to take on the avatar of Nataraja, the Lord of the Dance. In this form, he is the source of all movement within the universe and also signifies the end of an aeon through his dance of death and destruction. This chalkstone sculpture depicts the dance of Nataraja, in his divine splendor, perched atop the demon Andhaka after a fierce battle (Ugra in Sanskrit). The wild, flowing locks and the frenetic activity depicted within this intricate work of art showcase the culmination of cosmic energy and the joy of victory at the end of a hard fought battle, one which is a signature event which has been immortalized by artisans over centuries.
